Epilepsy Care - Seizures, Diagnosis & Treatment
Epilepsy and Seizure Care

Epilepsy Care

Epilepsy is a central nervous system disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness.

Anyone can develop epilepsy, but with the right diagnosis and medication, the majority of people can live seizure-free lives. We specialize in identifying seizure types and creating comprehensive management plans to ensure patient safety and freedom.

Recurrent Seizures

Sudden surges of electrical activity in the brain causing convulsions or staring.

Loss of Awareness

Brief blackouts or periods where the person seems confused or "blank."

Muscle Spasms

Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs.

Aura (Warning)

Strange sensations, smells, or feelings of fear before a seizure starts.

Types of Seizures We Treat

Seizures are classified based on where they start in the brain.

Generalized

Seizures that involve both sides of the brain at the same time, often causing loss of consciousness.

Focal (Partial)

Seizures starting in one specific area of the brain. The person may remain aware or become confused.

Absence

Often seen in children, characterized by staring into space for a few seconds (Petit Mal).

Tonic-Clonic

The most dramatic type (Grand Mal), involving sudden loss of consciousness and body stiffening/shaking.

Symptoms & Warning Signs

Recognizing these signs helps in getting timely medical support.

Temporary Confusion

Feeling lost or unable to speak or understand others for a few minutes after an episode.

Staring Spells

Gazing blankly into space and being unresponsive to name calls or touch.

Uncontrollable Jerking

Rhythmic movements of the arms and legs that cannot be stopped by holding them.

Psychic Symptoms

Sudden feelings of fear, anxiety, or déjà vu without an obvious cause.

Loss of Consciousness

Collapsing suddenly or losing awareness of surroundings, leading to potential falls/injury.

Tongue Biting

During intense seizures, patients may accidentally bite their tongue or lose bladder control.

Our Management Approach

Precise diagnosis and medication are key to controlling seizures.

1. Diagnosis (EEG)

We use Electroencephalograms (EEG) and MRI scans to map brain activity and pinpoint the origin of seizures.

2. Medication (AEDs)

Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) are effective for 70% of patients. We monitor dosage carefully to minimize side effects.

3. Lifestyle & Diet

Managing sleep, stress, and sometimes using specific diets (like Ketogenic) to help reduce seizure frequency.
